Know Your Employees

March 1st, 2009

How powerful would that be?

Unless an individual is extremely self aware (and most aren’t) people don’t usually think about how they think, how they behave, and what motivates them?

Do you?

How valuable would it be for you to REALLY UNDERSTAND your strengths and weaknesses in your thinking style?  How valuable would it be To REALLY UNDERSTAND your mental capacity, what you are good at, and what you need to work on?

How about behavior traits?  For example: I know I can be loud, talk a lot, and irritate the crap out of people, but really what does that mean?  How do I make this work for me and not against me?

What does any of this have to do with my passion and fire in life?  How will the way I think and behave help or hinder me from reaching my goals?

Mr. Business Owner, CEO, or HR Manager: How will the way your employees think or behave help or hinder you to reach your goals?  Do you know?  And if you do . . . what now?

The reality is that each position in each company takes a certain level of thinking and behaviors to get superior results. If you don’t know what they are you are leaving money on the table.

Job Profile Summary I have employee assessment solutions that will help you REALLY UNDERSTAND why your best people are successful and why others struggle. How powerful would this information be when you are hiring new people?  What about when you are developing your current people?  For and sample report click on the image to the right.  This is one of 10 different reports that can be generated from one assessment.

Retention can be better!
Performance can be better!
Leadership can be better!

But nothing will get better as long as companies continue to use old school methods of hiring and training.

My Kick in the A$$ For the Day!

February 25th, 2009

Here is the blog posting from Tim Ferriss, as well the link: http://tinyurl.com/6ualra

Enjoy, it’s pretty powerful stuff!

Business icons, superstar professional athletes, billionaires — it doesn’t matter how rich or how accomplished — I’ve had them all tell me the same thing…

There are moments when you feel the world is too much. Days and even weeks when you want to (or perhaps do) pull up the covers and half-sleep in bed until nightfall, avoiding a feeling of hopelessness that seems insurmountable. Long-awaited deals fall through without warning, haters attack you without reason or fact, circumstances turn good decisions into awful realities — sometimes it just feels like the deck is stacked against you and there is nothing you can do about it.

I’ve felt the same on more than a few occasions, and more are coming.

Entrepreneurs in particular seem prone to feeling on top of the world one minute, only to feel crushed by it the next.

To this breed, I assure you all: in our species, it’s normal.

It’s an integral part of building anything remarkable, whether a business, a relationship, or a life. Expanding your sphere of comfort and abilities comes with a cost: repeated self-doubt.

I thank my mother for forwarding me the above video to put things in perspective. In your moments of self-doubt, I encourage you to watch it and meditate on all of the things you’ve done that you once considering impossible. The odds you’ve overcome, the critics you’ve proven wrong, and the small defeats that — through making you stronger and smarter — made huge victories possible later.

Get back up. Bigger and better things are waiting for you.

Four Questions

February 4th, 2009

HalffullNow, you are the only one that is going to know these answers so if you are lying . . . you are only lying to yourself.

  1. On a scale of 1 (poor) – 10 (great) how would you rate your: a. Health and Wellness
    b. Personal Finances
    c. Relationships
    d. Feeling of Accomplishment
  2. Who are the FOUR closest people to you in your life?
  3. On a scale of 1 – 10 how passionate are you about where you are going in life?
  4. On a scale of 1 – 10 how much control do you feel you have?

Why did I ask you these four questions?  Think about your answers and paint this picture in your mind.

  1. On a scale of 1 – 10 you rated your health and wellness, personal finances, relationships, and feeling of accomplishment. These four areas represent the four tires on your vehicle to the life you deserve.

    I ask you:

Are your tires full?  Are your tires balanced? How smooth is your ride?  If you continue to drive on them in this condition what will your journey be like?  Is the condition of your tires good enough to with stand the twists, turns, and bumps that you might face on the road?
What do you need to do to fill and balance them?

  2. Who are your FOUR closest people in your life? These FOUR people are riding in your vehicle with you.  You have one in the passenger seat and three others in the backseat. Remember these four people are riding with you in your vehicle to the life you deserve.

    I ask you:

Are these FOUR people the best people to have with you on your journey?
Will these FOUR people help you get to where you are trying to go or will they be a distraction?
Are they behind you 100% and committed to your vehicle reaching it’s desired destination?

If not . . than who?

  3. Fire How passionate are you? Your Passion is your fuel that will keep your vehicle going.  If your passion is low chances are you might run out of gas before you ever reach your destination, leaving you stranded on the side of the road some where.  If your passion is high, your tank is always full, you will never run out of gas, and no matter the twist, turn, and bumps in the road you will keep moving toward your destination.

  4. How much control do you feel you have? This might be the most important question of all.  Are your hands on your stearing wheel OR are you letting other people drive your car?  Maybe you’re driving, but you have a loud mouth in the backseat barking orders all the time.

What does control look like for you?

These are the IMPORTANT questions that we rarely ask ourselves.  We need to be asking ourselves how we feel in key areas of our lives.  We need to be assessing and reassessing our relationships to make sure that our network is supportive and healthy.  We deserve to feel great about ourselves and the road that we are on.  When we ask our selves these tough questions this is how we change and start living with intention and passion.

So ask yourself the tough questions and start living the way you deserve to be living!

When I Grow Up . . .

February 1st, 2009

I am a gym guy. My idea of a perfect day starts off in the gym at about 5 AM. I like getting a good night’s sleep, waking up early, and starting my day off with a good workout. The physiological benefits are obvious; when we exercise our bodies we have healthier bodies. When I go the gym I don’t just walk out feeling good physically, the gym is a great place to go off in your own world and think.

When I am at the gym I listen to my MP3 player full of my favorite and motivating songs. It’s the energy of the music that can get my body moving, but it’s the words of the songs that I benefit from most. Each song has a story and some of the stories can change your life if you’re listening.

The song that gave me my ‘aha’ this morning is “When I Grow Up” from the Pussycat Dolls. I know, I know . . . I listen to the Pussycat Dolls . . . shoot me! I would guess most people would listen to this song and leave it as a catchy pop tune . . . but it is SO much more than that. If really listened to this is four minutes that can change your life. Check out these lyrics:

“Now I’ve got a confession[Ha Ha Ha Ha]
When I was young, I wanted attention[Ha Ha Ha Ha]
And I promised myself that I’d do anything[Ha Ha Ha Ha]”

When I grow up, I wanna be famous, I wanna be a star, I wanna be in movies
When I grow up, I wanna see the world, Drive nice cars, I wanna have groupies
When I grow up, Be on TV, People know me, Be on magazines”

They used to tell me I was silly[Ha Ha Ha Ha]
Until I popped up on the TV[La La La La]
I always wanted to be a superstar[Ha Ha Ha Ha]
And knew that singing songs would get me this far”

Too many people forget about what they wanted when they were younger, when they had dreams, and anything was possible.  We quit promising important things to ourself and fall out of control tending to other people and other less important things.  We worry about what others think of us.  People want and need to be connected to their passions in life and start saying: When I grow up, I wanna . . .

AND GO GET IT!!!!

Don’t Be Afraid to Be A Resource

January 30th, 2009

Lightbulb I was inspired today by a blog posting from Drew McLellan titled: Share What You Know.

When I work one on one with my clients I have no problem being a resource for them.

  • I help businesses with employee retention, performance, and leadership development.
  • I work with individuals, couples, and small groups helping experience realizations that will allow them to take action and gain greater fulfillment in their personal and professional lives.
  • I facilitate workshops for large groups of people on various topics.
  • As a Realizational Speaker my goal is to get people to challenge the way they think.

When it comes to me promoting my ‘expertise’ and ‘throwing it out there’ I seem to struggle.

  • Will people find value in it?
  • Do I have the right to talk about it?
  • What will people think?

Really . . . all if this is just BS excuses and barriers that may be the difference between great success or mediocrity.

Drew’s post is a great reminder of the importance of promoting our knowledge and giving our prospects a taste of what we offer.

A Story Everyone Can Learn From

January 28th, 2009

I was watching Sports Center this evening and I heard a story that really got me excited involving Arizona Cardinal’s Wide Receiver Larry Fitzgerald. A story that everyone could benefit from as it is a display of “Team First” decision making based on bigger pictures goals of an organization.

Larry Fitzgerald by i_johnson.If you have been paying attention to the NFL play-offs you know all about Fitzgerald.  If you haven’t been paying attention, Larry Fitzgerald is one of the best Wide Receivers in the NFL and with the help of Kurt Warner and the rest of his team has personally dominated each defense he has played against so far. This means that when the time comes for contract talks he is positioning himself for big money.

A story that was posted today on ESPN.com reports:

“Larry Fitzgerald would look at restructuring his contract if it would help keep fellow Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Anquan Boldin on the team.” (Fitzgerald and Boldin are arguably the best Wide Receiver duo in the NFL)

Fitzgerald continues to say:

“Someone asked me a question if I would be willing to do something to help the team, and I said, ‘No problem,’” Fitzgerald said Wednesday. “This opportunity right here to be playing deep in the postseason, this is an amazing feeling. I’ll do whatever it takes to get back to this point going forward in my career.”

This is one of the coolest things I have heard come out of professional sports in a LONG time.

See, I am a huge Minnesota Vikings fan and I got my fill of cocky wide receiver BS from 1998 – 2005 from Randy Moss. Year after year I would defend his foolish comments and poor decisions hoping that he would get his head out of ars and take his career seriously. Eventually he was traded away, but thanks to Terrel Owens and Chad Johnson the cocky wide receiver BS lives on.

It’s great to see a wide receiver who has the right to be cocky take his career seriously and make his team proud on and off the field. I just hope this great story gets as much air time and press as all the other worthless stuff does . . . but, it probably wont.

America’s Ultimate Test

January 21st, 2009

During the election I admit, I wasn’t ready to jump on the Obama bandwagon.  Not because I didn’t like him or because I thought he wouldn’t do a good job . . . there were too many question marks for me.  Perhaps it was the sources I was listening to.  Perhaps it’s the fact that I am naturally skeptical of people especially when their is a lot of hype around them.  No one can deny . . . Obama has created hype!

Liberty Tree Dedication: Flag in Hand by Andy Ciordia.Bottom-line, the man is amazing and I am 100% behind him.  Nothing excites me more than seeing people excited about their lives and their future . . . everyone deserves this.  Obama is responsible for millions of people feeling differently about their lives and their future. WOW . . . I mean seriously . . . WOW.  He’s clearly a difference maker, but how long will the average human being living in the United States stay excited.  We thrive on drama and excitement . . . Obama gives us both.

See, I truly believe the human potential is amazing and with in reason we can do anything we want to do. BUT, it seems it takes a once in a life time event, such as an Obama election to get us to think differently about life.  Why?

Again, I think Obama is amazing and great for our country, but why does it take Obama to become president to motivate us to get our heads out of our asses, be excited, respect each other, and proactive about the future?  The opportunity has always been there. And, we can’t blame Bush OR others for people’s rollar coaster attitudes?  It starts inside our heads.

  • Why does it take New Years for us to set goals for ourselves?
  • Why does it take Valentine’s Day for us to do something nice for our loved ones?
  • Why does it take holidays for us to find it important to spend time with our families?
  • Why does it take us to hit rock bottom for before realize changes need to happen?
  • Why does it take something terrible to happen to someone we know to get us to think?

What is wrong with right here . . . right now?

Think back to September 11th. It took a disaster of that magnitude to temporally bring America together. Do you remember how the country banded together?  Do you remember the pride everyone felt in their country?  Do you remember how everyone talked about supporting each other? I remember the night that Bush spoke to America and declared war.  I think it was a Wednesday night and I was in a bar with a hundred people.  When the bar wasn’t cheering for Bush they were silent, hanging on to every one of his words . . . didn’t take much time for that to change.

We are a society of New or Next? If we don’t like something . . . let’s move on.

I hope everyone that is fired up today will sit back, let the man do his job, and stay excited!

Yesterday was an amazing day.  People should celebrate and feel great, but also think about how they can be accountable for their thoughts, actions, and their future.  I just hope people remain excited and hopeful when the “newness” fades and the endorphins wear off.

This next year will be interesting that’s for sure!
